Agencies Involved: Keswick MRT, Cockermouth MRT, Coast Guard
Keswick team were requested to assist Cockermouth MRT with an incident near the top of Grisedale Pike. A young man in an accompanied group had taken a wind-assisted tumbling fall down a rocky section and sustained head and shoulder injuries. The group fortunately had a group shelter which provided essential protection in the wild conditions. Team members approached up the unrelenting slope known as the Grisedale Grind, the name of a fell race route that leads from the forest tracks near Revellin Moss directly to the summit of Grisedale Pike. Due to the possible severity of the injuries and the location helicopter assistance had been requested from the Coast Guard. The young man was assessed and secured in a vacuum mattress before being stretchered part way down the slope to a suitable place where the helicopter could land. Coast Guard R936 from Caernarfon arrived and was able to land on the ridge. The casualty was loaded for onward transfer to Carlisle Hospital. Many thanks to R936 for their help.
