Barf (19)

Callout Date: 31/03/2023
Callout Time: 12:41 pm
Agencies Involved: Keswick MRT, Cockermouth MRT, Coast Guard R936

A woman in her mid 30s was climbing Barf with family members. On reaching the bad step on Slape Crag she attempted to climb but decided against it so started to descend at which point she slipped and fell a short distance onto her back. In lots of pain the woman was unable to continue so wisely called for help. Due to the location and the difficulty of extraction down the very steep loose slopes helicopter assistance was requested. Cockermouth MRT also kindly responded to this callout sending a couple of vehicles of team members due to low Keswick numbers. The casualty was assessed and loaded onto a stretcher for a short rope-assisted carry down to a more suitable place for a helicopter winching operation. Many thanks to Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 936 from Caernarfon who on arrival  lowered their winchman to assess the situation before lifting the casualty into the helicopter for onward transfer to Carlisle Hospital. Thanks also to Cockermouth for their help.

16 Keswick and 12 Cockermouth team members. 2 hours 49 mins
