Great End (26)

Callout Date: 05/04/2025
Callout Time: 1:13 pm
Agencies Involved: Keswick MRT

The team received a report that two people had got into difficulty on Great End, however there was no specific information on location or the nature of the problem. Incident leaders and control were unable to make contact with the people and so two vehicles were deployed with team members to go to the summit of Great End prepared for a crag rescue.

The first team deployed with full crag rescue kit – for Great End that’s 650m of rope! Upon reaching the top of Grains Gill shouts for help and a whistle was heard and a we got a visual of their orange survival bag. It appeared they had taken a direct route up in the Custs Gully area; this area is usually reserved for winter climbers.

As the first team made it to the top of Great End the second vehicle’s team members arrived at the top of Grains Gill. Acting as spotters team members were able to assist from below the crag ensuring the ropes were set up in the right location to send a team member down from above to extricate the walkers. With ropes rigged and a team member down with the walkers, we prepared to raise the crag-fast walkers up to the top of Great End. Once at the top the thankful walkers enjoyed the warming sun having been in the shade for quite some time.

Whilst this incident was underway the team received two further callouts running one after each other.
