A fell runner came across a couple who were struggling to descend the Wythburn Valley above the south end of Thirlmere. The eight month pregnant woman was suffering from hip and knee pain and moving very slowly, she was also wet and cold. After assisting for some time the runner descended to Steel End Farm to phone for help and returned shortly after with the local farmer bringing warm, dry clothes for the woman. Many thanks to both of these guys for their help. The team made their way up valley nervously discussing wilderness childbirth but fortunately this was not the appointed time. A team doctor examined the woman before she was wrapped up in a heat blanket and stretchered back to their car parked at Steel End car park.
