Sprinkling Tarn (11)

Callout Date: 31/01/2026

Agencies Involved: Keswick MRT

Saturday evening, seven team members deployed to Sprinkling Tarn after three campers used the Apple iPhone emergency relay to hail for help. While the group was equipped for the outdoors, the challenging winter conditions and fading daylight made it difficult to safely establish their campsite, and we found them in a dangerously cold state upon arrival. The group were incredibly appreciative and humbled, admitting they were inexperienced in the realities of winter wild camping. Our hill party navigated wind, rain and snow underfoot to reach them, providing warm clothing and heating blankets before assisting with their gear and escorting them back down to safety.

This rescue serves as a reminder that winter wild camping is a significant step up from summer trips. It’s an environment where weather assessment, specialised equipment choice, and camp craft are tested to the limit, and we encourage everyone to gain experience in these skills gradually as the seasons change.
