Calf Cove, Great End (37)
Callout Date: 02/04/2026
Callout Time: 8:05 pm
Agencies Involved: Keswick MRT, Wasdale MRT, Langdale Ambleside MRT
Thursday night is training night for the Keswick team. Part way through our medical session on breathing all our phones simultaneously buzzed indicating a callout. A man had been reported overdue from a walk on Seathwaite Fell by his wife. Fortunately the man turned up before the team went out. A short time later a second callout came through via the Wasdale team concerning two young men who had called 999 saying they were lost in the dark, were 3 hours from their car and stuck in snow. With poor mobile reception information was limited but the police managed to trace their location to Calf Cove. The team set off up the valley from Seathwaite with a view to covering the two most likely paths down from Great End. Meantime both Wasdale and Langdale Ambleside teams prepared to search their respective paths towards the area as we didn’t know where the men had started from or where they would end up. Fortunately the first people Keswick team encountered turned out to be our missing chaps who had made it down using a small torch they had picked up in a service station on their way here. They made it down by themselves but their story is one that has become increasingly common in recent years; a late start, inadequately equipped, little knowledge of their route or what it would entail. In this case however it was a good outcome.
