Rosthwaite Fell/Stanger Gill (84)

Callout Date: 11/07/2026
Callout Time: 6:29 pm
Agencies Involved: Keswick MRT

Saturday was a hot day with thunder storms forecast from late afternoon. The team received a callout to a 16 year old male who was somewhere on Rosthwaite Fell whose legs were locking up, he had fallen in a bog, lost his shoe (which fortunately he recovered), it was raining hard, he was dressed in shorts and t-shirt, his phone battery was low, there was thunder and lightning and his one year older ‘mate’ had run off. Attempts to call him failed due to poor reception and a phone find also initially failed as his phone location setting was off. Once this was resolved a phone find gave his location at the top of Stanger Gill above Stonethwaite campsite. The young man had actually done a good job to find his way down, the terrain up there is not the easiest to navigate. Near the foot of the steep Stanger Gill path he was met by team members who had gone to search for him. Fortunately he was fine and not too traumatised although he said he had been pretty scared. The story was the two had walked up Langstrath, had a swim in Blackmoss Pot then hiked up the fell (we think Cam Crag) and onto the fells behind. His mate had greater peak-bagging ambition and had cleared off, we assume towards Glaramara leaving our young man to fend for himself. The team drove the young man back to Keswick where the two were reunited. They were advised that a party should never separate in the hills but clearly they have so many other lessons to learn……..
