Bessy Boot (98)

Callout Date: 03/08/2026
Callout Time: 12:46 pm
Agencies Involved: Keswick MRT, Coastguard helicopter Rescue 897, Penrith MRT

A 20 year old competing in an orienteering event injured her ankle after catching it in a hole. As Keswick team was initially short on numbers, and facing a long and difficult extraction from the Bessy Boot summit area, assistance from Penrith MRT and Rescue 897 based at Carlisle was requested, and they duly obliged. As Keswick team were making their way up the Stanger Gill “stair master” path from Stonethwaite campsite, we were pleased to hear that Rescue 897 had winched the casualty and agreed to take her back to Crow Park in Keswick, where she was received by the Penrith team. On the descent back to Stonethwaite we started hearing rumours of a lake incident so made haste back to Keswick.
