Four people headed straight up Broad Haystack aiming for Bessy Boot from Stonethwaite. They had intended going up the steep path above the Stonethwaite campsite but went through the wrong gate and continued on steep and slippy ground thinking that things would improve. Nearing the top they realised they couldn’t safely climb further or descend back the way they had come. The team took a similar line straight up to the group from where they were roped back down to the valley.
