A man was walking the Coledale Horseshoe with his Border Collie following a route indicated by his Garmin device. Whilst descending steep ground the dog got itself stuck on a ledge from which it couldn’t return. Unable to safely climb back up to the dog the man reluctantly called 999 to ask for Mountain Rescue assistance. In blustery conditions the team made their way up to Eel Crag on the side of Crag Hill from Force Crag Mines. The lead party went above the location and rope rigged to lower a team member down to the dog. Other team members went around the base of the steep ground to help guide the upper party to the location before climbing up to the dog’s owner who was cold but otherwise fine. The dog was then lowered from the crag in a purpose-made dog rescue bag. Everyone then walked down to the team vehicles at Force Crag Mine.

The excitement wasn’t quite over as on our return along the Force Crag Mine track a dog walker informed us the road at the foot of Whinlatter Pass was closed due to a fallen tree meaning a very long detour. The urgent call of dinner gave strength for team members to pull the offending limb aside, enough for us to continue on our way.
