Derwent River (98)
Callout Date: 28/08/2024
Callout Time: 1:04 pm
Agencies Involved: Keswick MRT, Coast Guard inc Helicopter, Fire and Rescue, West Cumbria Search & Rescue, Cockermouith MRT
Three men intended to descend the Derwent River in Borrowdale in an inflatable canoe from Rosthwaite to Derwentwater. One man got in and the boat took off in the strong current. The two left on land searched for 40 minutes before reporting their friend was missing. Poor phone reception meant further more precise information was hard to gather. Keswick MR team members were deployed from Keswick boat landings and Portinscale Marina to search the lake and river. Cumbria Fire and Rescue, West Cumbria Search & Rescue and the Coast Guard helicopter were also tasked to the search. Fire and Rescue found the missing ‘sailor’ safe and well on the road downstream of Grange, he was oblivious of the search. The helicopter was stood down before it had deployed. Thanks to all who were preparing to deploy including Cockermouth MR Team.
