Agencies Involved: Keswick MRT, Various Lakes MR teams, RAF MR, Coast Guard

In the early hours of 9th May the Wasdale team requested help locating a missing man who was reported to be on a walk up Scafell Pike. A search was initiated at first light by the Wasdale team with other Lakes teams covering their own respective sides of Scafell and Scafell Pike. Keswick were tasked to search all possible paths on the Borrowdale side. Once this initial search of the paths was completed phase 2 involved more detailed searches of likely areas. Low cloud and bad visibility hampered some search areas. The day’s visibility improved and R199 Coast Guard helicopter performed an extensive aerial search. Despite the combined effort the man was not found so the teams were stood down for the evening whilst plans were made to continue the search the next day.

For the Keswick team day 2 tasks were allocated to cover Seathwaite Fell which had been mostly in cloud the previous day as well as the rough ground and gullies around Taylorgill Force then Criscliffe Knotts just off the Corridor Route.

Tragically, during the morning the man’s body was found near to Great End. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends of the man.
