Sprinkling Tarn (57)

Callout Date: 31/05/2025
Callout Time: 3:09 pm
Agencies Involved: Keswick MRT, RAF Leeming, NWAS, Coastguard helicopter

Having almost reached Stockley Bridge on the stretcher carry on incident 55 (Sty Head Pass) we were alerted to yet another call-out, this time at Sprinkling Tarn. The team again split up with three team members making their way back up Grains Gill with medical and warming kit. The rest of the team continued down to Seathwaite to deliver the Sty Head Pass man to his partner who transported him to hospital. Keswick and RAF team members then made a u-turn back up Grains Gill to Sprinkling Tarn just as the forecast heavy rain appeared. At the tarn a man had slipped and broke his ankle. After some strong analgesia the man’s ankle was reduced and splinted. A request was made for a Coastguard helicopter for an extraction but due to low cloud and high winds had to abort. The man was therefore stretchered and sledged down to Sty Head tarn and onwards towards Seathwaite. As the team was now pretty tired after being out for what seemed like an age, a big cheer went up when 13 members of RAF Leeming appeared on the skyline and carried the stretcher the rest of the way.

A huge thanks to RAF Leeming for support throughout the day, and for Keswick team member Jeff, it was a birthday to remember.
