A group of five in two canoes were heading towards St Herbert’s Island on Derwentwater when one of the canoes with three people capsized in rough and windy conditions. One person had manage to self rescue and tried to help the other two in the water. The other canoe had made it to the island and called for assistance. Keswick MRT launched the rescue boat at Derwentwater Marina and was quickly on the scene and extracted the three who were struggling to make progress in the windy conditions. The rescue boat then made its way to the island to pick up the other two in the group and returned all five to the Keswick launches. All were cold but one was suffering mild hypothermia and was examined by the ambulance service. The Keswick Launch Company later recovered the canoes and equipment that had been left behind.
