A lone walker, planning on spending the night in Dubs Hut bothy became very concerned due to high winds potentially affecting the stability of the roof. The man felt unable to get himself down off the fell in the wild weather conditions. With no mobile signal the man made use of the feature on recent iPhones to send a satellite message to ask for advice. To do this he had to stand outside in the cold driving sleet to get enough signal to send a text. With little information about the circumstances a small team was sent up the steep track from Honister Pass to Dubs Hut in a Landrover to investigate whilst more clarity was sought via the Apple iPhone response service. Attempts to get back in touch with the man failed as he was sheltering in the hut. On arrival the team found a very well equipped young man settling down for the night in the relatively ‘comfortable’ bothy. The man opted to return to Keswick with the team when the offer of a warm bed was made to him by a team member with a guest house.
