Callout Date: 22/08/2026
Callout Time: 1:22 pm
Agencies Involved: Cockermouth MRT, Keswick MRT, Coastguard helicopters R897
The team was deployed to assist a walker who experienced a sudden onset of severe abdominal pain near the top of Grains Gill, close to Great End. The casualty was completely unable to walk. While Keswick MRT members were en route and at Seatoller, they had to divert to a higher-priority fallen climber incident. Cockermouth MRT was requested to assist with a vehicle and headed towards the scene to take over this incident. Shortly after, confirmation was received that Coastguard Helicopter R897, operating out of Carlisle Airport, had been tasked to assist.
The helicopter crew dropped their winch paramedic at the scene, while the majority of the Cockermouth MRT team stood by at Seathwaite for a potential helicopter uplift to the scene. A nearby member of Wasdale MRT and one member of Cockermouth MRT made their way to the location on foot to assist. Following a medical assessment and treatment, the rescue crew and team members were able to walk the casualty and their partner to the aircraft. They were subsequently flown to the West Cumberland Hospital for further care.
