Blencathra (146)

Callout Date: 17/10/2026
Callout Time: 6:30 pm
Agencies Involved: Keswick MRT

A couple had successfully completed an ascent of Sharp Edge but took a wrong turn on the descent ending up by the River Caldew on the north side of Blencathra. They attempted to cross the river but one slipped and ended up in the water and became very cold. It was now getting dark and they decided help was required and so they triggered a Google Pixel SOS as there was no mobile phone coverage. Keswick team used a Land Rover to get near to their position across the river but could not locate them despite using search lights and a thermal camera. A further call came in from the couple after they had climbed up onto Mungrisedale Common and managed to get mobile phone reception. They were encouraged to keep moving, to keep warm, and using their mobile phone torches managed to rendezvous with Keswick team members who had made their way back round Blencathra to make an approach from Mousethwaite Comb. The relieved couple were provided with a heated vest and guided off back to the vehicles.
