High Tove (3)
Callout Date: 01/01/2024
Callout Time: 2:31 pm
Agencies Involved: Keswick MRT, Coast Guard
Whilst still en route back to base after the Pennines search a third callout came reporting a man with a broken ankle close to the summit of High Tove. A well equipped couple were walking a circuit from Thirlmere when the man slipped and went over on his ankle with an audible ‘snap!’ Two passers by were able to find a signal to make a 999 call but the couple were also able to send a GPS location with a Garmin InReach satellite tracker/communicator. Keswick team approached from both the Thirlmere side and from Watendlath but fortunately Coast Guard Rescue 199 from Prestwick, having just dealt with another Lake District casualty, was still in Carlisle and offered to help. Many thanks to R199 for airlifting the man to Carlisle hospital and dropping off the partner en route in Crow Park in Keswick. The woman was then taken to their car in Thirlmere.
