Mines Gill, Helvellyn (18)
Callout Date: 20/02/2026
Callout Time: 7:04 pm
Agencies Involved: Keswick MRT, NWAS
A man was descending Helvellyn, by a direct off-piste route which eventually leads, according to the OS map, to a path besides a gill. In reality the mapped path is a hard to follow, overgrown, and a washed out old miners track. Unfortunately whilst navigating this terrain he took a 10m slide down a waterfall, ending up in the beck at the bottom. The fall resulted in a bang to the head and some cuts. He was however conscious and managed to call 999 for help. Keswick team made their way up the gill and the man was located after hearing his whistle & shouts, and eventually seeing his head torch. After a medical check over he was found to have only minor injuries and was able to walk out with assistance. He was taken by land ambulance to hospital for further checks.
