Sharp Edge (19)

Callout Date: 21/02/2026
Callout Time: 10:38 am
Agencies Involved: Keswick MRT, Penrith MRT, Coast Guard helicopter R936

Since the start of the year there have been a spate of call-outs involving long falls where the casualties have emerged largely unscathed. Saturday proved to be another such case where the casualty had incredible “luck”. Keswick and Penrith teams were undergoing a joint training exercise on Sharp Edge, in pretty grim conditions, when the teams witnessed a man falling 30m down the “usual” gully. Fortunately he did not fall the full length of the gully, and being on scene, a rope rescue system was quickly established. A team medic was lowered down, and after initial checks the man was deemed well enough to get roped off to the nearby “chicken path”. Further checks confirmed that the man had bruising to his hand and thigh and after some pain relief was able to walk back to the road where a friend drove him to hospital.

Due to the nature of the fall, and as a precaution, Coastguard helicopter R936 support was requested. Once it was confirmed the man had only minor injuries they were stood down. Many thanks to them for responding.

It should be noted that Sharp Edge becomes notoriously slippery when wet, significantly increasing the risk, and where a fall can have severe consequences.
