Agencies Involved: Keswick MRT

A team of three men set off to climb Scafell Pike. One of the three turned back somewhere above Stockley Bridge and returned to their car before changing his mind and followed on behind his friends. Some time later an informant advised the Wasdale team of a mildly hypothermic male who had become cold and wet and was now sheltering in the Sty Head Rescue Box. The companions meantime had continued to the summit but on returning to their car in the valley they discovered their friend wasn’t there.

The Wasdale team passed the rescue to Keswick. Keswick sent two vehicles of team members to Seathwaite from where they continued on foot up towards Sty Head Pass in impressively wet and windy conditions. The casualty was found just below the rescue box, he had started to descend on his own. The man was given warm clothes and some pain relief and helped to walk down, he had very sore knees. Not long into the descent it became necessary to put him on a stretcher for a carry back to Seathwaite where he was reunited with his friends who were sheltering in a rescue vehicle.

On the descent the team came across another party descending very slowly with one of them suffering from a bad knee. Some pain relief was given.

Before setting off on an adventure it is always worth asking:

  • Am I confident I have the KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS for the day?
  • Do I know what the WEATHER will be like?
  • Do I have the right GEAR?

Be ADVENTURE SMART
