Thursday night’s training started with the usual kit checks before heading to the Pocket, a bar in town, for beers and pizzas to celebrate two of our team members, Peter Little and team leader Chris Higgins, both reaching an incredible 1000 rescues. What a milestone! The beer was flowing freely, pizzas were being devoured faster than they could be produced and the craic was good when of course we got a callout. Fortunately there were enough team members who weren’t drinking to respond soberly.
A call had come in from a guesthouse concerning an overdue couple of women who were walking the Coast to Coast. A phone find placed them on Windy Gap between Green and Great Gable meaning they had missed their turn off to Honister and continued straight on and were now lost. Two Landrovers with team members drove up the mine track above Honister to the Drum House from where they continued on foot to Windy Gap. The pair were found in good spirits huddled in a group shelter. They were then escorted down to Honister in what can only be described as minging conditions (windy and wet is an understatement). The women were taken to their accommodation and the team returned home to dry out.
In team leader Chris’ own words: ‘I can’t think of a better way to celebrate 1000 rescues than to eat pizza, have a drink and go on another rescue. All with good friends!’
