The Borrowdale Mountain Rescue Team founded, after an appeal by “Rusty” Westmorland.
1948
First callout- a search for a missing walker on Cross Fell. There were 9 incidents in 1948.
1951
Name changed to Keswick Mountain Rescue Team.
1959
First Team Land Rover.
1964
Use of radios established.
1975
Base established at Central Car Park.
1981
Mike Nixon became Team Leader, when George Fisher stepped down after 35 years as Leader.
1984
Horace “Rusty” Westmorland passed away.
1985
First 4×4 ‘personnel carrier’ Ford Transit.
1994
Mark Hodgson became Team Leader.
1996
New Base at Lakeside Car Park. Introduction of Vodaphone pagers.
1999
George Fisher passed away.
2000
A rescue on Skiddaw in extreme weather conditions on New Year’s Eve.
2005
The Team assisted the Police and Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service dealing with flooding in Keswick.
Retirement of Des Oliver after 54 years’ service.
2006
The year saw the first involvement with a major water-based rescue on Derwentwater.
2007
The Team was involved in the filming, at Honister Pass, of episodes of “Coronation Street”.
2008
The Team attended to incidents in the “Original Mountain Marathon” weekend, during which there were high winds and torrential rain.
2009
Another rescue in extreme winter conditions on Skiddaw.
The Team was involved in a major multi-agency operation to deal with the effects of flooding in Keswick
2010
The record year to date: 140 callouts
Technical rescue training now expanded to include training in Canada.
2011
The start of the 999 text service for calling for rescue.
2012
The Prince’s Charities Day event was held locally.
Retirement of Donald Angus after 43 years’ service.
2013
Alan Allcock (member since 1968) passed away.
2014
New Team Leader Chris Higgins.
Mark Hodgson, who was Leader 1994-2014, remains an active team member.
2015
Dick Fisher (founder member) passed away.
The Team was again involved in a major multi-agency operation to deal with the effects of flooding in Keswick.
Retirement of Brian Spencer after 45 years’ service
Launch of Bristow Helicopters SAR operations in KMRT area.
2016
Mike Nixon retired from active service and was awarded Honorary Membership of the Team.
Change in status of the organisation, to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation.
2017
Introduction of further systems to record Team members’ training and personal development.
2018
Mike Nixon passed away.
